The Miami Vein Center wants to stay on the cutting edge of technology.
Therefore, in addition to the clinical services and teaching offered at the Center, sophisticated research, normally reserved for the large academic medical centers is being undertaken. The research activities are under the direction of Dr. Almeida and the entire Center staff contribute to the research activities. The MVC has the ability to design medical protocols, develop data collection instruments, and carry-out all components of the research. This has a number of advantages for our patients. First, there is the assurance that MVC has the latest equipment and that our physicians and staff know the newest techniques, even before they are available to the general public. Second, MVC patients, after giving written informed consent, have the opportunity of participating in research efforts that may bring them added benefit while contributing to the care of future patients. As an example, throughout 2005 MVC worked with a medical device manufacturer in the research and development of a new method to close superficial veins in the legs. This new technique may have significant advantages when compared to current conventional methods. Further, the MVC signed a research contract with another medical device manufacturer to investigate new surface laser technology that may lead to more efficient treatment of small surface veins. Research activities also lead to the development of peer-reviewed medical articles. This keeps our physicians and staff at the forefront of their fields and mandates that the Center keep accurate medical records. This additional record keeping and tracking allows the Center to know with confidence its clinical outcomes. When this information is shared with potential patients, they know what to expect from a specific surgery or treatment.
