[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]If you are wondering about treatments that are available for spider veins vs varicose veins, a good start to a better understanding would be to look at the differences and similarities in the two conditions. Both involve blood vessels that are enlarged and can usually be seen through the skin. Spider veins happen to the capillaries that branch off from the larger vessels. Varicose veins develop in larger blood vessels.

Varicose Veins

The most common place for varicose veins to form is in the legs. The reason for this is that the blood in the legs has a longer distance to travel on its way back to the heart and lungs. In addition, because the legs are among the lowest parts of the body, especially while standing, blood must be pumped against the pull of gravity in order to return it to the heart. Because this force would naturally have a tendency to cause the blood to flow backwards, the veins are equipped with valves that only allow the blood to flow in one direction.

If these valves fail to function as they should, the blood begins to pool in the veins. This is because of the added pressure against the walls of the veins as a result of the faulty valves. This pressure causes the veins to enlarge and become varicose.

Spider Veins

Spider veins are similar to varicose veins, except they are smaller and often occur in the face and chest as well as the legs. In most cases, the only problem they cause is with appearance. Varicose veins, on the other hand, are frequently accompanied by symptoms like pain, numbness and tingling.

Sclerotherapy to Treat Spider Veins and Varicose Veins

If you have either or both conditions, there is good news in that a variety of treatment options are available. Of all the methods that are in use today for treating spider veins vs varicose veins, sclerotherapy has been around the longest. In use since the 1930s, its effectiveness has withstood the test of time. It is also fairly easy for medical professionals to administer, and it can be done as an outpatient procedure.

Sclerotherapy is done by injecting a solution into the targeted vein. This solution irritates the walls of the vessel and causes it to collapse. What remains turns into scar tissue that disappears from view over the next several weeks as the body absorbs it.

Laser Treatments for Spider Veins and Varicose Veins

Laser treatments have become a widely used method of choice over the past several years. They are done with the use of highly concentrated beams of light that is focused on the veins to be treated. The heat from the laser safely destroys the blood vessel. This procedure is also normally done in our office without the need for a hospital stay. Those receiving the treatment can expect to return to their normal duties right away. Radiofrequency closure and ambulatory phlebectomy are two other popular treatment options.
